Abstract: The peculiar feature of asyrnrnetry, - to be rnore exact in the sense of Van't Hoff: chirality - clearly distinguishes the living matter from the non-living matter (Pasteur). This dogma has been recognised in chemistry throughout a century. During the last two decades however more and more material accumulated that allowed for apossible existence of asymmetry also outside the living world. The discovery of the parity violation in weak interactions initiated a search for an analogous - thoughpartial! - break-down of parity in chemistry. Incidentally on the occasion of the International Biophysics Congress 1972 in Moscow Professor A. S. Garay (Szeged)and the writer met and decided to start a cooperative effort to gather scientists interested in this speculative topic and to provide a panel for an open flow of ideason the recent developments in the field of the search for the origin of asymmetry in chemistry. About 40 colleagues from very different fields of science supportedthe initiative and came to Jülich in September 1973. The Proceedings intend to give as close and lively an image of the actual progress of the symposium as possible. This naturally also means the inclusion of all the discussions which were reproduced from the original tapes and give an idea of the enthusiasm and the engagement ofthe participants. For the sake of preserving this "atmosphere of creative freshness and originality" I [... ]
